Acts 6:1–7 — The Seven Chosen

Growth brings a problem: Hellenist widows are being neglected.
The apostles will not neglect the word of God to serve tables.
The church chooses seven qualified men.
They are of good reputation, full of the Spirit and wisdom.
The apostles devote themselves to prayer and ministry of the word.
The congregation chooses; the apostles pray and lay hands on them.
The seven appear to function much like the first deacons, although Scripture does not call them deacons.
The word of God continues to increase.
Disciples multiply greatly in Jerusalem.
Many priests become obedient to the faith.

Acts 6:8–15 — Stephen Opposed

Stephen is full of grace and power.
He performs great wonders and signs.
Members of the Synagogue of the Freedmen dispute with him.
They cannot withstand his wisdom and the Spirit.
Men are secretly encouraged to accuse Stephen.
The people, elders, and scribes are stirred up.
Stephen is seized and brought before the council.
False witnesses accuse him of speaking against the temple and law.
The council looks at Stephen.
His face is like the face of an angel.
Acts 7 will give Stephen’s defense.
